In 1968, he completed his education by getting a Bachelor's Degree from Ankara Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences, Banking Management Specialization Department.

Burat, who started his career as a temporary officer in the Auditing Department of the Court of Accounts between 1968 and 1973, was appointed as a First Degree Auditing Officer in 1973, as Auditor in 1976, Assistant Chief Auditor in 1978, and Chief Auditor in 1979. He was elected as a Member of the Court of Accounts by the TRNC Assembly in 1986 and served as the Chief Auditor until 2000 and then the Chairman of the Court of Accounts.

He was appointed as the Financial Coordinator at Near East University in 2000, and worked at Near East Bank Ltd. between 2009 and 2012. He served as the General Manager of Near East Bank Ltd. As of 2012, he has been a Member of the Board of Directors.

Born in Paphos in 1940, Selçuk Burat has a good command of English and Greek. He is married and has 2 children.
